Pisiksik Justice Department (PJD) provides support to Inuit who are either in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS), those at high risk of entering the system, or have previously had contact with the system. Culturally relevant and appropriate approaches are observed, utilizing the 8 guiding principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) in all areas of support with the aim to reduce the number of Inuit from entering or re-entering the penal system. The goal is to achieve resiliency, healing and wellness to ensure Inuit maintain healthy and positive lives.

PJD offers a culturally supportive multifaceted group of programs to ensure Inuit are supported at every level of contact with the criminal justice system. Pisiksik Justice staff specialize in Gladue Writing, Restorative Justice, Legal System and Probation and Parole Navigation.

The department is an amalgamation of direct service delivery, diversion, client-tailored services and programs, and advoc towards policy changes.

Pisiksik – “A Bow and Arrow”

Pisiksik is the Inuit word for “a bow and arrow”. These tools were a vital part of Inuit hunting practices and skills for survival.
